Abstract
Purpose: This study was to investigate the relationship of burden and social support of informal caregivers for cancer patients in the postoperative state.

Methods: The subjects consisted of 103 informal caregivers caring for cancer patients. Data was collected from October 5, 2004 to January 21, 2005. The instruments used for the study were the Burden Scale developed by Zarit et al. and modified by Seo and Oh; and the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire developed by Norbeck.

Results: Burden had a mean score of 64.67, and social support had a mean score of 304.12. The informal caregiver¡¯s burden was significantly related to the caregiver¡¯s educational level, personal health status, income, expectation of patient¡¯s disease status, and expectation of patient¡¯s prognosis. The informal caregiver¡¯s social support was significantly related to a close relationship with the patient. There wasn¡¯t a significant relationship between the informal caregiver¡¯s burden and social support.

Conclusion: The results suggest a need to develop a nursing program to reduce the burden on informal caregivers for cancer patients.
